Some Dos and Don'ts in choosing destination dresses:

DO
Choose light fabrics & floaty styles for weddings in a hot country. A huge tulle ballgown will be hard to walk in on the beaches of the Caribbean.

DON’T
Avoid sleeves & choose strapless or thin straps instead. A long gown will keep most of your body warm so keep your upper body cool with little straps so you stay comfortable.

DO
Choose light & cool fabrics such as polyester, chiffon or georgette for a tropical wedding. Heavy organza’s & silks are best avoided.

DO
Keep your dress covered in hot climates. Bugs may be attracted by the light color & a covering of little black spots is the last thing you want!

DON’T
Not all destination weddings take place in hot climates. Winter weddings are popular & locations such as Vienna or Lapland are a hot choice. For a cooler climate choose something warm but no too bulky, remember you will need to get it in a suitcase. Accessorize with wraps or shrugs. If you are going for a snowy location perhaps even a long velvet coat or cape. Keep you toes warm with thermal innersoles in your shoes or go mad & buy white Uggs!

DON’T
Although generally advised against a full skirted gown can still be an option. Order a separate petticoat which you can pack separately to the dress.

DO
Pack your dress really well with lots of tissue paper to avoid marking.

I am looking to keep my wedding cost very low. Instead of buying a "wedding dress" I found a site that has a wedding sarong, it is embroidered w/ sequins. They also have white dresses for under $50. I think I will wear the sarong for the dinner party the night before and the dress for the wedding.
